Then engine sounds like it wanna start but wont fire up! Its an S reg 1.6 vtr.We called the AA out and they said it was the petrol pump, so we replaced it, still the same problem, called the AA again and they said no power was getting to the pump and said it was the relay. Replaced it and still the same!!!!

Any one any ideas of what else the problem could be?

The Unfortunate Short Answer Is That Given The Symptoms, There Are Too Many Things That Could Be Wrong.

The One Thing That IS Certain - Your AA Is Causing You To Spend Time And Money To NOT Fix The Problem.

You Would Be Better Off Having The Car Towed To A Reputable Mechanic And Have Them Fix It.

You will Spend Less Money And Time This Way.

l Confess, l Know Nothing About The European Car Repair Scene But, l Do Know A Good Answer When l See It ;)

The AA has a very over inflated reputation. Basically the AA WILL fix 99% of problems, but that is only because 99% of problems r VERY, VERY simple & only require a very minimal knowledge of mechanics which most people do not possess. (usually flat battery, blown fuse or a puncture)

The problem could be many things as a previous answerer has stated, however, since the AA has already determined that the fuel pump is getting no power the possibilities r instantly limited to only a few things.
l have seen this problem more times than l can remember & most people try replacing the injection double relay as the AA did. Most people r usually wrong.

The main power feed to the injection relay comes direct from the underbonnet fusebox, so if no fuses r blown & the relay is ok then u have a wiring fault. l have only ever seen this wiring fault occur within the connector plug of the injection relay, never at any other point in the loom.

l would determine which pin the faulty wire goes into by connecting a breakout box into the loom & testing the pins individually with the relay still connected, as this is not an option for u then taking it to a GOOD main dealer will be the cheapest course of action. As a guideline l have, on numerous occasions, diagnosed this fault correctly within 15 minutes of seeing the car & then taken a further 30 minutes to fix it permenantly. So a GOOD mechanic should do it in less than an hour, if it takes longer then it is because the mechanic is no good at electrical diagnoses or because they r totally unfamiliar with Citroens.

If u want to attempt to fix it yourself then there r 2 ways that u can go about it.
1. Go to a Citroen dealer & buy a wiring tail for the injection relay. This is the connector with about 3 inches of wire already connected into it in each pin.
Then u need to cut the old connector off & attach the new connector. Remember to only cut one wire at a time so that u know u r connecting the correct wires to the correct pins.

2.You carefully cut away the rubber sealant at the back of the connector until u have exposed the corroded wire (there is usually a surprising amount of green corrosion in the back of the plug that cannot be seen until u cut away the rubber).
Then run a small drill bit through the corroded wire to clean it out & remove all bits of the individual pin & corroded wire. Get a new connector pin & attach a length of wire. Feed it into the connector & thoroughly reseal the back of the connector (i usually use windscreen glue as it is much better than silicone).

The second method is what l do, but it requires a very careful hand & patience. A slip of the drill or stanley knife & u can destroy the connector or cut other wires creating much more work for yourself. The advantage is that u can use the correct guage of wire & the repair is almost indistinguishable from the original condition if it is done properly. Using wiring tails will leave u with a big bunch of connected wires just behind the relay (untidy & amatuerish).
