can some one help me, l have a message on my car dashboard, which is says (TOP UP WATER LEVEL).

by the way its 2.0 HDl 2001 year
Washer water - Topped
Rear washer water - l dont know where is the tank
Radiator water - Topped
Expansion tank water - l dont know what is Expansion tank, can some one please explain it to me.

l expect your wife has thoughtfully left that for you to remind you to make sure you stay good and hydrated, so do not forget to drink lots of spring water during the day. Stay healthy!

Suggest you read the hand book which came with the car.

When you open the bonnet up you can follow the pipe that comes from the radiator to a little bottle with probably some coloured water in. Do not open this when the car is hot!!! When the engine is cool open it and top up to the max level no further! refer to your owners manual to be certain if you are still unsure take it to your nearest garage.

First of all to clear up any confusion, the front & rear washers r both fed from the same tank so there is no seperate rear tank.
The expansion tank is where the radiator water goes & is mounted on the driver is side inner wing, but u know this as u have already topped it up.

There r 3 main suspects for this problem since u have already ruled out the possibility of a genuine low water level.

1: The water level sensor is faulty. l cannot remember for sure if this message relates to the coolant water or the washer water, but u will have a coolant level sensor, although the washer level sensor was only fitted to models with headlight washer jets.

2:A wiring fault. This is unlikely & if it is the case then it is most likely to be corrosion on the level sensor connection. You could unplug the sensor & look to see if the metal pins in the connector look clean or if they have green/white corrosion on them. The coolant sensor is fitted into the header/expansion tank, it is square & black. The washer level sensor is fitted into the washer bottle, u can access this by removing the driver is front wheel & pulling the wheel arch liner (black plastic) out from the front.

3:A BS l configuration error. This is a high possibility if the car is new to u or if it has been into the garage for any sort of electrical work or if u have had a water leak near the driver is footwell. If the BS l (Built-In Systems Interface) is configured that the washer level sensor is fitted when it is not actually fitted to the car then it will cause this message to be displayed.

Personally l would check the state of the level sensor connections, then consider changing the sensor. If u have a multimeter u could check the sensors by seeing if the resistance changes from 0 Ohms to infinity when u immerse or remove the sensor from water.
Finally l would take the car to a dealer & ask them to diagnose the fault. Your knowledge of the car is history will tell u wether or not to mention the possibility of a BS l configuration problem.
