Term that originiated in the Red Scares of the 1950s. If someone were accused of being a communist sympathiser, they were referred to as a ''pinko''. This originated when Nixon was running against Ex Officio Senator Douglas for the position of California. He accused her of wearing pink underwear, implying that she sympathised with communist parties. Nixon won the election by a landslide.
