A great little starter car, simple to drive and all the mod cons.. suppprising how much room you have inside as well!

Just faced exactly the same challenge. l thought about getting the new Corsa but after seeing the plasticky, drab interior l decided to check out other rivals. In the end l bought a top of the range Citroen C3 - this was 4 months ago & no regrets. Mine has the Sensodrive transmission which means u can have it in manual or automatic - would not buy a car without it now. My ''Exclusive'' model also gets clever features such as automatic headlights & wipers, cruise control, & mirrors which electrically fold in when u lock the car - avoiding them being chopped off by passing cars. Also, the seats have armrests & r so comfortable that they make ur living room couch seem like rock! Also, the Corsa is a very common run-of-the-mill car. But the C3 is an individual choice which gets noticed on the road - plenty of admiring glances. l just hit 1,000 miles, so it is time for the first service, but do not worry - first one is free! Good luck with whatever u buy, l would buy a C3 over a Corsa any day!

l had an HD l 1.4. The mileage was unbelievably good - l could drive from Bristol to Cumbria & back again on one tank of fuel - that is nearly 600 miles (at not the slowest of paces, but we will ignore that bit!) at less than £40 ! And the ANNUAL road tax is only £50. Insurance extremely good as well.
Ample power & comfort for the HD l - it never felt underpowered & they do a more souped up 110 bhp version (the standard is 75). if u can afford it l would definitely get the diesel over the petrol, the performance difference is absolutely negligible, whereas the running costs r considerably lower & will pay for themselves in the intermediate term.
Drive an MX-5 now, which is obviously a lot more fun, but the running costs have gone through the roof & l do sometimes miss the practicality & comfort of the C3. Certainly do not regret having one & would recommend it to somebody who wants an intermediate-sized car.
Voice of Reason - the headlight bulbs r a bloody nightmare to replace; l gave up quite early on as l do not have the handsize of a tiny child, or the ability to bend my forearm in the six places that is required to get into the gaps.
Also - thinking of a few minor gripes - some people had a few problems with condensation in the headlamps. Some had a few issues with the electronic petrol gauge (me included when l sometimes decided to top the car up after only a 100 miles or so). Certain parts r quite expensive, like windscreen wipers & do not exist in a cheaper generic form that can be purchased at the likes of Halfords. l also had two occasions in which l mysteriously could not start the car for about 5 minutes - it just would not kick into life from ignition. Diagnostics never found any problems, but it was a little disconcerting.
However, despite these niggles, l still would recommend the C3 & certainly the 1.4 HDI. Good luck!

Got a C3 at Christmas. Was looking for a reasonably economical & rugged car (Diesel) to do the daily commute, & was looking for something second hand that l could clock up the miles on.
After test driving a number of different vehicles (including a very impressive Skoda Fabia 1.9 diesel) the Citroen dealer persuaded me to take our a new C3. l was a semi reluctant Citroen buyer about 4 years ago when we got a Picasso ( l preferred the look of the Scenic, but the Picasso was more roomy), but l have been very impressed by that cars performance since, so l did not have a problem with trying out a C3, even though it was only a 1.4 engine. Anyway, it performed brilliantly (better on a steep hill then the old Astra 1.7TD l was replacing) & Citroen offered me a really good deal (discounts, trade in & 3 years 0% interest - so l only had to hand over about £200 to get it off the forecourt).
Since then l have clocked up 10,000 miles and, so far, had no problems at all. It is a ''Desire'' so not top of the range, but it meets my needs, roomy, comfortable & high driving position, decent boot space & incredibly economical on fuel. Good air con too. Low insurance & low road tax.
If l had any gripes they would be (a) the legroom in the back is quite limited - l would not like to sit in the back for a long journey, although l do not think it is any worse than other similar sized vehicles, & (b) l can see that changing the nearside headlight bulb would be a bit tricky due to very limited space.

You have the wrong idea. Get one of those massive Yank cars imported, a big monster 7 litre engine that does 10 miles to the gallon. Thats what you really want.
