I've got a Citroen Xantia N reg 1.9td, whenever l brake it makes a squealing noise, plus when l put my brakes on fully it clunks.We only bought it a week ago, the seller said it had new discs in Nov.

l might be worng but by the sounds of it , if the noise is a high pitched squel it could be the waer indicator on the inner brake pad letting u know it is low & u need to replace ur pads, but without seeing or hearing the ''noise'' it is a long shot but this is the most common cause of brake noise. another thing u could look at is weather the brakes r '' glazed '' ( glazed being polished & smooth) which is another common brake problem which causes poor brake proformance & is cause by riding the brake ( most common in an auto that dose alot of round town driving ( stop - start).

A little squeeling noise is okay, especially if the squeel goes away when u press harder. But u said it clunks, this is a little worrying - could mean extreme pad wear (to the point of having no pad material).

A constant squeeling noise could mean the ''squeeler'' (a piece of metal designed to rub on the disc when the pad is worn) is doing its job.

A drive to ur local Halfords garage will confirm if the brakes r good. l doubt they will charge u too much money (if any) just for a quick look.

By right, when u replace a disc, u should also replace the pads. And these should be done by axle, in pairs (ie; left & right side together).

The seller said he replaced the discs. does that mean he did not replace the pads? Who actually did the replacement? Does he have any paperwork to show?

Even if he was telling the truth, even a slightly seized/jammed brake could have easily worn out the pad by now.
