l need to jump start another car and l have lost my instruction manual. l seem to remember that you can damage some cars by attempting a jump start and l can not remember the sequence for connecting leads etc.Help please.

Red to red. Black to black and of course you can

put the leads on one at a time and when you have finished remove them one at a time and you will be fine

This sounds so simple but can easily end up costing a fortune in repair bills as modern cars' engine ecus can very easily be permanantly damaged through incorrect jump starting.

1. Make sure both cars r not touching each other (including when doors r opened).
2. With ignition switched off on both cars, connect the positive cable to both of them (does not matter which one u do first).
3. Now connect the negative cale to both cars, again it does not matter in which order.
4. Ensure all the clamps r secure, the terminals r clean & the clamps can not contact each other.
5. Start the donor car (the one that is not flat) & let it tick over for a couple of minutes to allow some charge to get to the battery of the dead car.
6. Leave the donor car running & try to start the dead car, u may have to give the donor car some revs to put a bit more life into the dead car is battery. If all is well it should start.
7. Leave both cars like this for a few mins then disconnect the cables, negative first from both cars taking care not to let the clamps come in contact with each other.

If u just connected the jump leads to a car that was dead from a car with a healthy charge with the engine running the huge amount of volts that r thrown at the dead car is electrical system can damage delicate components such as ecus so it is not recommended.

To use a Xsara Picasso for jump starting, there is a jump start post under the bonnet under a plastic cover on the passenger side of the engine bay for the positive lead. For the negative lead use the bonnet catch.

Anytime you jump start a car you risk blowing the voltage regulator in your alternator.
