There is a little lever to the right of the driver is seat in this red 1990 or 1991 citroen car and the mechanic of the company who was leasing the car said never to touch it, it was important. What the heck is it for?

It is the lever for the ejection seat!! No, seriously, I've never heard of someone saying that to a driver of a car. Look in the glove compartment or center console and try to find an owner is manual. It should have the information in there.

Perhaps it was the bonnet release lever which whilst driving would cause a bit of a mess!

If l understood you correctly, you're talking about the lever for height adjustment. The ride-height can be adjusted in all Citroens with hydro-pneumatic suspension.
The lever for this is positioned between the gear stick and handbrake.
Is that it? :)
